Cell Balancing: Ensuring Harmony in Lithium Polymer Batteries
Cell balancing is critical to maintaining the health and longevity of lithium polymer batteries, which is widely used in various portable electronic devices applications. This essential process ensures that individual cells within a battery pack maintain a similar state of charge and voltage, preventing imbalances that can lead to reduced capacity, overheating, and even safety hazards.
The Basics of Cell Balancing:
A lithium polymer battery pack typically comprises multiple individual cells connected in series. Over time, due to variations in manufacturing, usage, and aging, these cells can experience differences in their capacity and voltage levels. Cell balancing aims to address these differences and equalize the charge among cells to maximize the overall performance and lifespan of the battery pack.
How Cell Balancing Works:
Voltage Monitoring: Cell balancing begins with monitoring each cell‘s voltage within the battery pack. This data is constantly collected and analyzed by a Battery Management System (BMS), a control circuit that manages the operation and safety of the battery.
Threshold Detection: The BMS sets a voltage threshold beyond which a cell is considered overcharged and another threshold for when a cell is discharged. If any cell’s voltage crosses these thresholds, the BMS takes action to bring the cell’s voltage back within safe limits.
Balancing Act: To equalize the cell voltages, the BMS employs various methods:
Passive Balancing: In this method, the excess charge from higher-voltage cells is dissipated as heat through resistors. This process is less efficient and can result in energy wastage.
Active Balancing: Active balancing involves transferring charge between cells using external circuits. It can be more efficient and effective in equalizing cell voltages. A charge is moved from cells with higher voltage to those with lower voltage, evening out the overall pack voltage.
Cell Shunting: This method uses shunt circuits to divert current away from cells reaching their limits. It ensures that cells stay within safe voltage ranges.
